I was introduced to this delicacy after moving to South Dakota. Apparently it's a staple here!

    It's quite easy.

    1 lb. ground beef
1 or 2 cans cream of mushroom soup (I can never remember. You'll know when you mix it up if one is not enough.)
    tater tots

Brown and drain the ground beef.
Mix the ground beef, soup and tater tots.
    Top with tater tots.

Bake in 400-ish oven until heated through. 30 minutes or so.

If I get carried away, I throw in a can of green beans or corn.

DH loves this. I tolerate it a handful of times a year. It freezes well, too.

I was going to add that you MUST add green beans! At least we always did in Minnesota.

I LOVE this dish, but my DH has to sophisticated a palate, too bad for him.

I don't know Jeanne, sounds like an abuse of tater tots to me. Shouldn't they just be enjoyed in their pure state? ;)

I have never heard of this dish until I saw one of those shows on the Duggars. Here's a link to their recipe and other delicious treats. :)

I love Tater Tot hot dish -- I include a chopped onion with the ground beef and use cream of mushroom and/or cream of celery. I also throw in 2 cans of french style green beans.

Yum! Season with lots of salt and pepper. It's even better as leftovers!

DH thinks it's gross so I get the whole casserole to myself. :)'

I haven't had a tater tot in I don't know how long. I have to say, that sounds pretty yummy! If DH wasn't taking me out to dinner tonight to cheer me up (see bitching post :-) ) that's what we'd be eating. Sounds like awesome comfort food!

oooh, i like the ground beef and mushroom soup variety, i'll have to try that one too.

mine is with leftover chicken, mac and cheese and broccoli (i've done it with peas too, when i didn't have broccoli in the freezer).

boil one bag of frozen broccoli with 1 (or 2 depending on how big of a casserole you want) box of macaroni and cheese noodles, then follow the directions on the box for making the mac and cheese. combine with cooked chicken (usually leftovers from a whole bird the day before or extra breasts off of the grill but i have used 1 large can of chunk white chicken before too) and 1 extra cup of milk or fat-free half and half (you may need a little more extra liquid with 2boxes of mac and cheese to keep it from drying out while cooking the tater tots). spread mac and cheese/broccoli/chicken/milk mixture in bottom of baking dish, cover with tater tots and bake to cook tater tots.

Default A different recipe for tater tot casserole...

This is the one that we use with a little variation. It's a little different from the ones I've seen posted(also sound yummy), but it is soooo good. Here's the recipe-I'll tell you our variation at the end...

    INGREDIENTS:
    2 pounds tater tots, thawed
1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
    1 cup finely chopped onion
1 (16 ounce) container sour cream
1 (8 ounce) package sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded
    1 dash garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt
    1/2 cup butter, softened
    3 cups cornflakes cereal
    1/2 cup butter, melted
    2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
    paprika to taste

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch casserole dish.
In a large mixing bowl combine tater tots, soup, onion, sour cream, cheese, garlic powder, seasoning salt and softened butter; mix well. Transfer to casserole dish. In a medium bowl combine cereal and melted butter; spread over casserole. Sprinkle the top with parmesan cheese (use more or less according to your taste) and paprika.
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until browned. (Note: It's a good idea to put a cookie sheet under the casserole dish, in case it bubbles over while cooking.)

I use cream of mushroom soup because we prefer that flavor. I don't do the chopped onion mainly because it's more of a hassle but it's probably good.(I add some onion powder to the mixed part) I do not use the softened butter that is mixed into the tater tots, etc. A lot of the reviews on Allrecipes.com where I got this from recommended eliminating this because it makes it too rich and soupy. I do use the butter mixed with the corn flakes though-so yummy! I recall thinking that the corn flake topping sounded gross but it's my favorite part. I actually use more than is called for and I crush the cornflakes. I cook up about a pound and a half of ground beef(or turkey) and season it with onion powder,salt,pepper-whatever you like.(it makes it more of a meal) I drain the meat and put in along the bottom of the pan. I put the casserole stuff on top of it. I've never needed to put a pan under it, likely because I don't use the extra butter. Enjoy! :)

Mine is much like the PP's.
Brown 1lb of hamburger - season with salt and pepper. Throw some onions in there if you're so inclined. Put it in the bottom of a 2-qt casserole dish.

Drain 1 can of french style green beans and layer the beans on top of the hamburger.

Put a layer of frozen taters tops over the green beans.

Mix one can of cream of chicken soup with 1 soup can full of milk. Pour this over everything.

Bake uncovered at 350 for about 45 minutes until brown and bubbly.

    Susan
