What's the deal with 6X?

I'm starting to buy DD size 6 clothes (pre-buying for next winter/summer) and I am confused by size 6X. What is it? Is it one size up from size 6? If so, then why isn't it size 7? Since it's 6X is it some kind of a plus size, like an extra wide size 6? Some clothing lines have 6 AND 6X, some just have 6. This implies that 6X isn't really necessary. What's going on here????

I'm sure it depends somewhat by brand but i find it bigger than a 6 smaller than a 7.

This is the size i buy for my eldest in osh gosh 6X
