Socks with sandals: yes or no?

I just can't wait for summer, and I was looking at these sandals for DS (17 mos):

Here's my question to all of you: would you put socks on your boy with these sandals? I know that it is such a big fashion faux-pas with adults (unless they are really old men in who just don't give a damn), but with kids... well, I was thinking about their feet being protected and staying clean(er), as well as absorbing sweat.

We put our DD in sandals with socks. For all the reasons you mentioned and others as well. Living in Japan we are always taking our shoes off in public places and I just don't feel comfortable with her going barefoot in a restaurant. I don't see a problem with it. I do shudder when I see my dad in white tube sock and Tevas, but I think its more that he has his tube socks pulled way up over his calves while wearing tacky shorts...

We do it often, but with more of a closed-toe sandal. DS has super-sweaty feet, so that is where it started. He also HATES to have anything get between his toes, and everything must stop until he sits down, takes off his shoe and removes the offending piece of whatever. There are certain outfits it just never looked right with, but most others it is fine. They are his standard Sunday church shoes in warm weather. Can't find any pics in shorts, just long pants, though we do use them both ways.

I wouldn't. But I'm firmly in the camp of no socks with sandals -EVER. Not as a fashion statement though, but on the principle that if it's cold enough for socks, it's too cold for sandals; and if it's warm enough for sandals, it's too warm for socks. :)

Last summer, I got DD fisherman style sandals, which are excellent for keeping the feet protected but cool. Something similar to this:

For a relatively new walker - I wouldn't get the sandals you linked to. I got something similar for DS at the end of the summer, when that was all I could find to replace the sandals he'd outgrown. And they just aren't very good for the playground. Even though DS will be two and a half this year, I plan on buying him fisherman style sandals again this summer.

No. I never put socks on my boys when they wear sandals. And they practically live in sandals during the summer. That's one of the perks of summer- I never have to go searching for a pair of tiny socks that match!

Besides, sandals are much cooler- socks with sandals just seems extremely stuffy to me. Plus, I think it looks funny. So my boys go sockless- we pay the price with dirtier feet, but they're boys! They're going to get dirty regardless! :)

Stride Rite told me to have them wear socks with their new sandals for at least a week, if not two, to help break them in without blisters, anyway. I have had Ds in his fisherman-style ones lately, on the warmer days. That way come summer I'll feel like they are ready to be worn without. With that style, I would just make sure the socks have grips on the bottom so that they aren't slippery in the sandal and make it hard for him to walk well.

---says the woman who wears her Birkenstocks with socks b/c they are the only comfortable shoes I have right now! Though I remember snickering at my High School Health teacher who would come in on cold and rainy days with birks & socks.

Remember when they start wearing new shoes they trip a lot for a couple of days. So you will be protecting those tender toes with socks. Dd only wears PINK socks with her sandals with ANY outfit she owns if she is wearing socks LOL!

I prefer the no sock look myself, but my fashion forward, I mean picky, toddler has other ideas. He insists on socks, but I think that is for two reasons: 1. he hates getting dirt and sand on his feet 2. he is a real creature of habit, which makes the change in seasons hard (must wear socks with all shoes, always wear a coat on outside, no shorts/shirtsleave shirts, etc-by the time we get everything sorted out, it will be fall and will have to start the transition over again, lol)

I was told the same thing at Stride Rite. I recently got 2yo DS a pair of Baby Guppy sandals (the other closed-toe styles they had weren't available in extra-wide) and he's been wearing them with socks the past few days. I plan to ditch the socks later on, but I'm not morally or fashionably opposed to them. :)
