Ds wears size 10 or so. The catch is I don't want them to have stiff soles. I found a pair I LOVE by Ecco, of course, for $63 so that's not happening. Any other brands? I like to spend $30 or less but will go up to $35.

Would 10.5 XW work?

living a crazy life with 3 boys
I am thinking now
of grief, and of getting past it;
I feel my boots
trying to leave the ground,
I feel my heart
pumping hard. I want
to think again of dangerous and noble things.
I want to be light and frolicsome.
I want to be improbable beautiful and afraid of nothing,
as though I had wings.

I know Merrell's makes velcros. I can ALMOST guarantee they have velcros in a 10.5, but if not they do have to mocs that are w/o laces.

They have these in 10.5, but they'll probably be around $50.

Have you tried the Zappos website?

DS wears 10 1/2W, and I have good luck with Stride Rite (that I get at an outlet) or New Balance.
ETA: There is a post on the Baby Bargains page for 40% off Stride Rite at www.kidsurplus.com YAY!

Have you looked at Land's End -

They say, "Open twice as wide for quick changes. Easy to pull on and off 400-gram Thermolite insulation delivers real warming power. Moisture-wicking lining. Updated sole is more flexible" in their copy.
We ordered some for my daughter, but they are being delivered to our in-laws house so I can't put my hands on to tell you how flexible is "more flexible" - I will be able to tell you next week!
ETA - forgot to say that they are $24.50

Those are cute, but I don't need "real" winter boots, just hiking boot style. =)

We got these pair of Moki's for Nick and I love them. They are so flexible and pretty stylish.

ETA: Okay, I just re-read your post and they are out of the price range, sorry! I don't normally spend this much on shoes, but I fell in love with them. They are also his only shoes aside from snow boots, so that helped with the rationalization! I figure they could be dressed up or down. Good luck. I think it's getting harder to find clothes/shoes as the boys get older!

I just have to post that of all places, and I do consider myself to be a moderate children's shoe snob (not by brand, but by how it feels), I found velcro shoes at Target! I almost never look in the boy's section b/c it's usually character shoes with lights and stiff soles. However on a whim I did. They had some navy blue double-velcro shoes by "Genuine Kids" (The Osh Kosh Target brand) which felt quite flexible and not too narrow for Ds. They have a bit of an athletic look so Ds calls them his "fast shoes." LOL. And at $15 they were a bargain. They also had several pairs of boots and other nice-looking shoes, but they were too stiff for my taste. I'm still on the hunt for a bargain on Ecco velcro boots though. haha Ds saw a photo of him in last year's SR boots and asked "Can we buy more of these?" I'm looking, honey!
Anyway, here's what I bought:

I don't want Ds to have all velcro but with a baby there is definitely a need for at least one pair he can put on himself. Their "Merrell-esque" ones were nice looking but too narrow for Ds to pull on.

Alrighty, so we trekked to the Stride Rite outlet and got him the same pair of hikers he had last year, for $20. He's happy. =D
