Default When to get a potty?

What's a good age for getting a potty to look at, sit on, talk about, etc? Thanks!

Our ped recommended around 18 months. It was shortly after that that Colin peed for the first time, and now he consistently pees on the potty right before his shower (at bedtime).

Really??? 18 months! That is just around the corner for me. I am surprised. I must say I potty trained ALL wrong with my first son, so I am pretty anxious about doing it right this time around. So, 18 months... wow...

Our ped also suggested 18 months. So I got a little bjorn potty for him. He enjoyed sitting in it fully-clothed b/c it was just his size. =) My thought was having it around would at least make it a normal part of our home for when he was ready. A few months later we bought the potty books but it was over a year later that he actually started using the potty. Ironically enough, he actually prefers to use one of those seats that actually sits on the toilet, now. Obviously we prefer that since we don't have to clean a little potty anymore.

I think I'll be on the lookout for one. My DD is 18 months, and she loves to watch me go to the potty! :-) Also, she has started tearing of toilet paper and pretending to wipe herself (sorry if TMI!) when I use the bathroom. I think this has more to do with her recent cleaning/dusting obsession than with any knowledge of pottying processes, but I don't think it would hurt to have a potty in the bathroom for her to sit on and get used to.
