Default Am I approaching potty training the wrong way?

DS is 28 months and we have been talking about the potty for several months now. We have read books about it, talked openly about it and he even sat a couple times on it (with no luck). The thing he likes to do most is throw toilet paper in the potty. Everyday before bathtime, I ask him if he would like to sit on his potty and the answer I get is , "no thank you, not today"! At least he is being polite. The second we get in the bathtub, he tinkles in the water. I talk to him that it would be better if he could do that in that potty. Should I not even ask him and just follow his lead? I could use some tips/advice.

Sounds to me as though you are doing it fine. Certainly I would continue to encourage him to use the potty (especially in lieu of bath water :)) but no need to push further. Read some of the other posts on starting potty training - there are a ton and you will get good tips.
