It's not A) Because the government didn't make them do it and B) there was a rigid latch backless, armless booster once--years ago-- that the dummy flew DOWN off of and the belt basically would have cut it in half in the torso...so I think no one bothered to keep inventing that sort of thing for a few more years.

In almost all cases, you must take off the LATCH and detach the harness when using a combo seat as a booster. The Gracos and Recaro Young Sport allow you to leave the tether on when using it as a booster (I've heard this is more due to the seats needing to weigh 9 pounds or less...that few ounces of latchbelt pushed them over the edge... basically, there's really no good reason except for 'you must follow the manual, period').

Is it pronounced "Jane" or "Ja-nay"? (remembering the "Bri-tex" or "Brigh-tex" debate!)

IMO, it's Jane' with the accent "ague" - that's French for "accent to the right that sounds like a long 'a' sound"! heh

Similar to how Renee' is pronounced.

I called the importer in Mass. and was told that the carseats are not approved for use in the US. The woman who answered said they are awaiting their shipment of the double jogging strollers, but are not getting any carseats.

Pity - they seem really cool!

Wow, that's weird... wonder why they are on the US website? and say FMVSS 213 approved? Methinks the importer is perhaps confused....(ok, at least I'm hoping they are, because I want one of these!)

I just called and spoke with the Texas rep, Heather Something. She told me that the "container" will arive from Spain in late May, and that the booster seats are now approved for use in the United States. She said that they will not be available in the stores until June. She said that she guessed that the seats would cost around $200, but that it would vary from retailer to retailer.

So, oldtimers who have been looking forward to this... can you please tell me why you like the Janes? How do they compare to the Recaro Start? Should I wait a few more weeks for the Janes to arrive? What is the advantage of a seat being attached at the bottom, like a Jane, instead of at the top, like a Recaro?

I posted here about six months ago and now my older dd needs a new seat. It appears that the Regent will only give her another inch of room on the shoulder straps, so we are considering going with a booster instead.

    Thank you for your help.

I'm on my second Recaro Start, and remembering why I sold the first one...it's SUCH a pain to buckle compared to my incredibly easy Parkways. My 8.5 yo can only buckle it himself in one particular seat of our 2 cars (captain's chair of the honda odyssey, and he loves the leg support of the Start), so we do use it there, though, and he likes it a lot, so I'll keep it for now.

But why does the attachment mechanism differ? The Recaro only added a top tether to make up for the fact that it weighs more than 9 pounds, which is the technical, but usually ignored, upper weight limit for a booster in the US (they don't have a top tether in Europe, apparantly they don't fret that heavy seats will crush children in crashes there...and they probably don't). The Jane' was designed after the LATCH standard was introduced, so it can use the lower LATCH bars... so designed from the bottom up, fresh for a new system. From what I gather, they are both fine in crash testing (google: oeamtc kindersitze for the austrian ratings of various seats...they aren't 'the same' but it's an interesting read nonetheless).
If I weren't an unstoppable carseat collector, I'd DEFINITELY want to play with and test out both of them before buying...but the few people I know who've seen the Jane' have been extremely impressed with it(I want to know seat depth and back height before I'm bowled over, though).

I actually came across a uk bulliten discussing this seat and they said it was pronounced Han-A. Anyway, I can't remember where exactly I read it, but it made me think of this post. I've decided that I have to buy this seat for my son, in Red. He is obsessed with all things Red. He won't be ready for a booster seat for a little while yet, so I'm trying to be patient. Has anyone bought one of these online yet? I saw one at stores.kiwi-kid.com for $199.99 but they're sold out. Is this the price at a regular store, too? I'd rather buy it from a store I've heard of and, ideally, I'd like to see it in person first. Well, Han-A, Janey, Jane, Ja-nay.. it's all the same to me. It seems like the perfect booster.
