    Default Fireplace safety gates?

    Hello,
With winter approaching and a 13 month-old who's recently become facinated with the fireplace, I'm in the market for a good fireplace safety gate. I haven't seen any gates that can withstand the heat of being mounted close to a fire, and that can curve out from the wall and back. It would have to be both sturdy and allow access to the fireplace. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Wendy

Check www.drbabyproofer.com. I think that I've seen one, but I'm not sure that it will fit your needs. It is a little pricey, but if you live in a place where you need a fire, it might be worth it. (Maybe shop around for a lower price once you know what you are looking for?)

    I hope that helps.

I would suggest the KidCo Configure Gate. That's what we have around our fireplace and it's held up well. The basic set contains three 24" segments and one of them has a walk-through gate (you have to lift, squeeze and hold to open it and our toddler hasn't figured it out) Additional 24" segments are sold so you can configure the gate to your needs. Each segment can also be angled in 10 degree increments to fit a curve. We have it curving around the front of our fireplace as well as the two built in cabinets next to it because they had glass doors.

It's a little expensive, $135 for the basic set and about $35 for each additional segment, but for our hard to gate area it's worked out well.

Here is a picture of it online

I don't have one (don't have a fireplace), but Kidco also makes a Hearth Gate specifically for fireplaces. It says the finish is heat resistent. You get five sections (including a gate that you can put anywhere in the configuration) for $149.99, and the extensions are $29.99 each. Each section is 24" by 28" high.

I do have the PlayDen (same material as the Configure Gate), and like it a lot! I got mine from http://www.babycatalog.com. Then seemed to have the best prices. And depending on what you plan to spend in the next year, it might be worth paying the extra $$ to join their "club" for a year, and get 10% off everything.

Here's the link to the Hearth Gate on their site:
