I also recommend the towns in Hunterdon County in NJ (closer to the PA border). I grew up in Clinton Township, and the schools there are quite good. Princeton is also excellent.

I think the nj monthly list is a great start. They also published a list of the best towns in NJ -- you used to be able to buy that from their site as well. It factored in schools, cost of living, quality of life, taxes, etc. Taxes vary GREATLY from county to county and from town to town in NJ. So, you should look at that when making your decision. You might pay more for a home in some towns, but the lower taxes will actually make your monthly bill much less than in other towns with less $$ homes.

Once you narrow down your choices to towns or counties, you can browse some of the current houses for sale on realtor.com or gsmls.com. I personally like gsmls.com much better, but I know some people prefer realtor.com.

I just went through this process a year ago. I actually bought a new home, helped my sister find a new home, and helped my parents sell their house and buy a townhouse! My favorite counties are Morris, Somerset, and Hunterdon. If you'd like feedback on any of the towns in those counties, let me know!

Hi - I Live here in Scarsdale and one of the reasons we live here is for the schools. Having been here 2 years now, I find parents are very competitive though but overall, Scarsdale puts a lot of time, effort and money to teaching the children. My mother is a teacher in Rye, NY. Fabulous schools but busting out at the seams in the elementary schools. Chappaqua, Edgemont I hear are also wonderful

We live in the north Howell area and are districted into Freehold Township High School which is very good. I know that East Brunswick, NJ has blue ribbon schools that are supposed to be excellent. I also grew up in Marlboro, NJ which has great schools as well.

I second the Bergen County recommendation. When we looked at house we only looked in towns that we knoew had good schools. We moved to Tenafly last year, and everyone always comments on how grat the schools are. Other towns in Bergen County with good schools are Closter, Demarest, Oradell, River Edge

Great Neck, NY (on Long Island, less than 30 minutes from NYC by LIRR) has consistently offered excellent community services and top of the line public schools for years and years but it's a very expensive community to live in. Definitely look into it if you're looking for a good education for your kids.
