    Default Modular homes

We are about to buy some land and had planned to build a conventional house on site. However, many people have asked if we have looked into modular. Apparently it is becoming more main stream but Alan and Denise don't really address it in their book. Am wondering if anyone has a) firsthand knowledge of modular building b) a good book to purchase similar to A & D's conventional book.
    Thanks, Barbara

This link, and the man who runs the site, may be helpful: http://www.taismho.com/ Also check http://www.hadd.com The problems I'm aware of with this type of home are similar to that of manufactured in that parts may be defective, or site installation/construction incorrect. Not sure if you're planning on doing the building yourself or not but a lot relies on the quality of local contractors if you aren't doing the work. The same issues occur in site built homes of course.

Some other sites you may want to check for advice, research etc: http://www.jlconline.com and http://www.ripoffreport.com Keep in mind that the manufacturer/builder you choose could have MANY complaints on file at BBB's, state agencies, and builders associations, that you can't access. It's a misconception that complaints are public info and many times they aren't. Though internet complaint sites don't have a lot of credibility in some people's eyes, they are often the only way a customer had, to voice a complaint publicly or warn others. The same can be said for recommendations to some extent. One public record you can research is court records but this would be a daunting task if the home builder/manufacturer is shipping components all over the country. And the legal recours is not the story presented by the media so very few owners of defective homes actually sue. Good luck and happy researching.
