    Default Basement Exits

We are just starting this home building process with a cookie-cutter builder who lets us modify the floor plans to our liking. The lot we purchased is flat and does not permit a walkout basement. We plan to finish the basement later on down the road on our own and need an exit to align with the fire code. The builder offers bilco doors for $2500 as an option. I think that is very expensive and I've been trying to find out what bilco doors really cost to buy and install. Any idea where I could find this info?

Has anyone had bilco doors installed in the basement? If so, do you remember the cost?

    Thanks.

Bear in mind that the price your builder proposes to charge is not just for the door. He has to include a foundation - of one kind or another - for a stairwell, the stairs and that Bilco door. At $2,500, the price is reasonable.

Thts less than our builder charged us. You only have one chance to do it- later it will cost alot more.
