Default How much have you spent on cloth diapers?

OK, this is perhaps a too personal question, but I'm wondering with all the kinds of diapers, and all the accessories, etc.... how much do the supplies end up costing?

From reading the "intro" thread, it seems like pocket dipes are the neatest, but also probably the most expensive... and if you're purchasing several types of diapers, it must add up over time.

So, how much does a CDing expert pay for diapers for the first few years?

While some people may be CD fanatics like stroller fanatics... does purchasing diaper stuff truly become addictive?

here is an old thread on this subject:

    http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/dcboar...ng_type=search

I know that people have spent more since then. :) But that question was how much we spent on the initial stash.

How much do you really need to spend?
About $100 or less on prefolds and Proraps covers.

    Can it be addicting?
Wooo-hoooaaa, absolutely! I'm sure I'm approaching the $800 mark (shhh...please don't tell DH!) I started this CD venture to help us save money, but so far, all I've done is collect cute diapers like they were designer clothes! But you know what? I've still saved money over disposables!

I gotta say I asked this several months ago (it might be the thread mentioned above)...and I love my girlies but I don't think folks were totally accurate...or didn't count what they didn't like, or didn't count what one day they'd sell...
In the thread i had sepent a good $200 more than most and I am a pretty conservative CDer...though we don't spoise at all!!!!!

I just really didn't beieve that I could have spent more than many here...

Maybe I'm worng but a few of us discussed this after the fact and I know many wondered...

I wonder how I could convince the IRS that collecting cloth diapers is a hobby and deduct my expenses? LOL

I spent about $250 initially, but I honestly have not kept track.

If I had to do it all over again, I would go with 6-12 prefolds and 12-18 pockets (stuffed with cheap microfiber towels) and be done with it. That's what I use now.

But I started out as a fitteds user and did that happily for awhile. Then my DD became a VERY heavy wetter and the fitteds I had weren't cutting it. So I bought about a dozen hemp fitteds to replace the cotton fitteds I had initially. But I discovered that she was SUCH a heavy wetter that even the most absorbant of hemp fitteds were not cutting it for us. So I consider my dabbling in hemp fitteds to be somewhat of a waste of time and money.

Since then I have realized that my inherent laziness makes prefolds and pockets so much simpler for me. :) You do have to buy a set in each size, but if you go with less expensive or second-hand pockets, its not so bad. You probably only need 3 sets at most.

I think the key is not to get sucked into the "cute diaper" madness. :) That way lies lots of $$$. :) If you enjoy it and can afford it, great. But if your goal is to save money and use less stuff, then its not a road you want to go down!!! Come here for diapering advice, but otherwise stay away!!! LOL!!

I have tracked how much I've spent on diapers since the get-go, since my husband initially thought that CDing was madness. I've included shipping and taxes, where applicable, in my totals since you often cannot get CDs without paying someone to ship them to you.

I've spent about $1100 on cloth diapers and supplies since I started ordering CDs in December 2002.
