Default Prefolds - diapers to burp cloths?

We aren't usually prefold users, but I have a stack of prefolds that I bought right before Colin pt'd (we were using them trifolded, laid inside an FB). They weren't used for that long before he trained, and I don't expect that we'll use them for Logan since we lean towards pockets and fitteds.

I want to play around with dying some prefolds for use as burp cloths, and wanted some feedback on whether you would use a former diaper as a burp cloth? Not to sell, just for our own use. Is that gross, or do they get clean enough in the wash (I can do some extra washes on them - maybe some bleach?)?

I've used my prefolds as burp cloths--basically, we would just grab a clean one from the pile and put of over my shoulder, on my lap, etc. They are also used at the changing table. I have several premiums in a pile. As one gets soiled, I just remove it and toss it in the diaper pail. Personally, I don't think it's gross, as long as it's been washed. If it feels gross to you, then go ahead and do some bleach on it, but I was fine with it. :)

So what kind of dye are you using?

I sure did. I just grabbed the top one and used that for dipe, burpie, wiping up my spilled drink, whatever.

I will also disclose though that I think our kitchen face wiper wipes and butt wipes are all mixed up at this point.

I'm glad you all posted about your dual diaper/wipe usage. I was wondering about this myself.
We have a bunch of cloth wipes and although I try to hide them up out of her reach, DD likes to use them as "yoga mats" for her stuffed animals. (She's odd, yes.) Sometimes she wants to take one to bed with her too. I thought it was kinda gross, but that's what the washing machine is for, right?

LOL, our wipes are also all mixed in. As Marisa said, that's what laundry machines are for. :) Wipes are used for faces (adults and children), hands, bodies, butts (adults and children), spills, whatever.

We don't discriminate here either...dipe, burp cloth, butt wipes are used as washcloths or to wipe a runny nose sometimes, etc.

Don't even bother with kool-aid. It won't take on cotton and they will be back to white after a few washes. The Dylon may do better, but is not considered a true fiber reactive dye.

I would get some Rainbow Rock dye at Hobby Lobby. They carry individual colors that come with soda ash packets in the box. You can even get extra soda ash which you may need with prefolds as they soak up alot of water. We tie-dyed t-shirts with it and they look great even after many washes. The process is fairly simple - soak in the soda ash solution for about 20 min and then apply the dye. Let sit for 8 hours then rinse well in cold and wash on hot.
