I was bothered by this as well. I realize the conditions aren not great in terms of facilites because of the lack of money, but I have been under the impression that the kids were, for the most part, emotionally well cared for to the extent the caregivers could.

It makes me want to go over there all the more...I think I want to rescue all of them, but I certainly cannot do that. One of my co-workers is in the process of a Russian adoption. He passed along something that really helped me with that feeling. I was talking about the possibility of adopting an older child, like a four or six year old to maintain the two year age difference with Lindsey, but also might want a younger child to avoid some of the issues that come along with long-term institutional care. He told me that someone told them, early in the process, that it didn't matter what age or sex child they adopted, they were still providing that child with a better life than they could expect if they remained in the system. It somehow calmed my need to "rescue" and get back to the original reasons we were persuing EE adoption.

But...it is stories like this one that bring out the rescue urge again...they tug at my heart in a particulary special way...:(

I might be wrong, but many times these "older", gosh isn't it hard to call a little 4 and 6 year old "old", but many times these children have not lived their lives in such a place. There can be some good news there in that they have had parents, love, or atleast "family" of sorts.

I say this because my friend, I had posted her journal under "older siblings" (and again they are just babes themselves so I hate to use "older"), but it was finances evidently that made them go to an orphanage. Granted they might not ever know the real story but they refer to things they remember in their Ukraine family/home.

I actually assume if we get a sibling group that the older child will remember their roots, it will fade over time but I find comfort in that they know family etc... if that makes sense.

I have to be honest what this journal says is not a trend that I have noticed in journals. Maybe it is because they are not privy or can't translate what is said, but for the most part many seem to be loving. SADLY some children of certain orgins I have heard bad words being used to describe them from Ukraine citizens, I found one journal interesting in that even the facilitator urged a family to avoid adopting a 4 year old Gypsy child because he was certain they'd be a "pick pocketer" one day.
    How strange....

Of course if we have a choice we are interested in the diverse population there that does not have as big of chances...

    Default Happy ending

Looks like they are close to going home with their 3 kids!! Can you believe they had a delay simply because the kids didn't know the parent's names- they were calling them mom and dad! My son didn't know my name until he was in Kindergarten (until then he thought my name was "Babe".) :)
