Need sweater pattern

I want to try making a sweater for a friend's newborn. Before now, my entire repertoire has been scarves and hats, so I need something EASY. If I could do it all in garter stitch, so much the better. Does anyone have a garter-stitch pattern for a pullover or cardigan that would work in a unisex color? If you do, I'd love to see a link, or you could email me a pattern. Thanks!

Rachel, I'm a knitting newbie and I'm working on a sweater from Melanie Falick's "Knitting for Baby." It's got very explicit instructions for many projects. I'm working on a pullover garter stitch sweater that is very straightforward and has instructions for putting a heart in the middle of the sweater. If there is a bookstore near you try taking a look at it.

Just wanted to second both of these suggestions. One thing to consider though is that since you've previously been knitting scarves and hats you should try to keep the finishing work to a minimum. Debbie Bliss has a great baby cardigan that knits up into sort of a giant cross, and then all you have to do is sew up the sides and under the arms. Garter stitch too.

Melanie Falick's book is great too, especially the instructions. The sweater on the front cover looks similar to the Debbie Bliss pattern but would be harder to finish up, I think, because the sleeves are knit separately.

My mom is a very experienced knitter and has knit the garter stitch jacket several times (including for Colin), and she really likes the pattern - very fast and easy for less experienced knitters, from my understanding.

Here's a pattern I was going to try. Just haven't had the time yet. It isn't just garter stitch and I'm not sure how "beginner" friendly it is (I'm a beginner too) but figured I'd post it in case you want to give it a try.

Edited...had to make sure the link would work. The file is a PDF file, so once you download the TXT file, you'll need to rename the file so that it has a .PDF extension. Then it should open in Acrobat Reader. :) There's a picture of the sweater on the third page.

Thanks, everyone! I got the Debbie Bliss book and also the Melanie Falick, and they're both wonderful. I am starting with the Garter Stitch Jacket, which is going really well. The cashmerino yarn is just wonderful to work with. :) Now I have aspirations to make a good half-dozen sweaters. I also found this one, which I actually started while waiting to get yarn for the Debbie Bliss pattern:

It's knitting up very nicely and is just soooo precious. I am making the preemie size (which is not all that tiny, really-- and Abigail wore preemie stuff for several months) and saving it for my next baby. It's on hold now while I work on the other and it will take a lot longer because the yarn is just so tiny, but it's absolutely gorgeous.
