Default Any ideas for coloring easter eggs - without the eggs?

Real ones that is. My DS is 3 1/2 and wants to color easter eggs. Now, I don't like hardboiled eggs and have no time/patience to blow out the insides of eggs (plus then bake something to use the bunches of egg insides) Anyway, does anyone have any ideas for another type of easter egg project I can do for a 3 year old?

What about making plaster of paris eggs and coloring them? There were directions to make Easter egg sidewalk chalk in Family Fun magazine (I think...).

How about decorating styrofoam eggs? It involves tissue paper and glue, so it potentially is just as messy as real eggs...

http://www.crafts4kids.com/projects/eggsciting.htm that's the project link, and there is a cute bunny made out of those eggs as well.

    HTH, and good luck!

I haven't looked but maybe they sell those cardboard paper mache type things that are egg shaped at a craft store.

I know it isn't thrifty and possibly wasteful but I would just hard boil the eggs, decorate away and then toss them later. After all 6-12 eggs are cheaper than anything else you are going to find to decorate. Plus you'll have a really good time with your child. If you really want to save them, then I'd probably blow out the insides of a few and well, toss the insides.

I saw wooden eggs at Michaels that you could paint. You could add to the collection each year and start a tradition.

I don't know how attached you are to the idea of not wasting anything, but none of us likes hardboiled eggs either, but we still do color Easter eggs. Really, eggs can be bought for less than a $1, so we don't worry about wasting a $1. For us it's worth the fun! And last year, DS was not even 1 yet, so when he played with them and they cracked, we just tossed them! So we didn't even worry about him damaging them in any way!
