Default ISO instructions to make a fabric "town" (m)

I want to make a fabric town that lays flat on the floor. With roads and parks and shops and such. I've seen rugs like this, but I am handy with a sewing machine but need templates.

    Something similar to this.

You can buy the preprinted fabric at Walmart. We did this and just sewed it to a piece of pre-quilted fabric on the back. The only thing I would have done different is to use some sort of fusible interfacing between the layers. I had to go back over and quilt some areas to keep it from puckering.

If you want something more custom, there was an article in the last issue of Family Fun on painting a canvas mat, with good ideas on how to make roads even, etc. that would translate well to fabric.

No Wal-Mart here, I'll have to ask my Aunt to look around. Thank you for the idea!
