Blue T-shirt, red fabric paint to paint an S on it, and a yard of red fabric pinned around the collar for a cape?

If you want to actually sew it and have access to a sewing machine, find a pattern marked "simple" or "for beginners." Then just buy what it tells you you need, and follow the directions. I wouldn't try doing it by hand, though.

My mom made a very simple cape for my sister when she was little. Just a piece of red fabric and a piece of elastic (maybe 1/4"?). She hemmed the fabric to make a thin pocket, ran the elastic through, and tied the ends together so it could go around her neck. She had a machine, but it would be easy by hand. Probably not the safest cape in the world :) but better than her security blanket tied around her neck.
