Default Staining raw wood toy box and adding decoration to top - help!

We just got big boy furniture for my DS and we would like to add a nice wooden toy box to his room. I would like the stain to match his bedroom furniture so we are thinking the best option is to go with an unfinished toy box and stain it to match the best we can.

I would like to add an American or Texas flag to the top to decorate ... how does one go about doing that without actually painting it on by hand (I am not a talented painter!)? Is that something that could be accomplished via decopage or something similar? Any ideas? Thanks!

I think decoupage would be the best way...

Find a picture of a flag you like, color copy or print it out to the size you want and decoupage it.

Find or make a stencil and paint it on with a sponge or sponge brush.

If DS is old enough, encourage his artistic abilities and have him draw one in crayon and then color copy it to the right size.

Find a fabric that has a print you could cut out and decoupage that... or color copy it.

Good luck. I'd love to see a pic when it's done!
