    Default straw cup question

Does anyone know of a straw cup that can take regular straws? Basically, I'm looking for a cup with a hole in the lid. It does not have to be spill proof. DS decided this week that he no longer wants to drink from a sippy cup, but will avidly drink from a straw cup. The problem is, he likes to put his fingers into the water and drop food in the cup while using the straw.

I bought some of the take n toss straw cups but did not realize that it needed to use the straws that came with it. Question for those that use these or other straw cups from playtex, evenflo, etc. How do you clean the straw? Does the dishwasher adequately clean the inside of the straw? I was washing the straw by hand but wasn't sure that I was adequately cleaning the inside of the straw.

    Thanks.

I was going to suggest the Take N Toss, but I see you have tried them. A regular straw won't fit through the hole? Maybe coffee stirrers would work as a straw in them?

Another option is to go out to eat at a restaurant that uses the kids cups that are plastic with lids, and you get to keep them. I think Dennys has them, probably lots of other places.

I use the Playtex flip up straw cups, but only for water because I am afraid of cleaning them.

I use regular straws in those Take n Toss cups. I just push the straw that comes with the cups through the hole so it stays partly open and push a regular straw through. The straw doesn't fit tightly but I haven't had a spill problem.

Another thing you can try is to use that Press n Seal plastic wrap and press it onto the cup after you fill it. Trim excess plastic and punch the straw through the plastic. But this will only work if your DS will refrain from trying to peel the plastic away.

I got some good cups with lids that have a hole for straws from Tupperware. They come in 2 sizes. I like them a lot for kids and myself in the car!!

I use the Take N Toss straw cups and throw the lid with the straw attached in the dishwasher. But I only use them for water. If you were to soak the straw in hot, soapy water and rinse with hot water, I think that would clean it adequately.

    Default Q-tip?

We use the Playtex cups, and I just take it all apart and soak the straws in hot soapy water for a while. I have never worried about it until y'all brought this up! Thanks ;)

I suppose you could scrub the straws with Q-tips if that is a concern.

Hmmm I guess I could get an ultrasonicator from the lab!

All I have access to is an autoclave, which would melt them.

I was thinking pipe cleaner or alternatively, the Medela microwave steam clean bags.

I, too, use the Take N Toss straw cups and I just wash them with by putting them in the dishwasher with the straws still in the lids. They get benefit of lots of hot water and soap washing, without getting lost. And you can find straws that fit the TNT cups. You just have to find the right ones. Not all straws work.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This weekend, I washed one of the take n toss straws and gave it to DS to use. However, he chewed it all up while using it so it is no longer reusable. LOL. Guess I don't have to worry about washing it! I did find some regular straws that seem to work with the take n toss cups.
