    Default Spitting up

My 12-week old DS spits up profusely, I'm sure it's more than normal. I've talked to the pediatrician about it, and she seems to believe it's not reflux, since he isn't fussy with it, so she doesn't recommend a medication like Zantac. I really don't want to medicate him either, but I'm desperate to find something that helps. We've tried the Enfamil AR without much success. Burping doesn't make a difference either. Sometimes he spits up right after earing, or it can even be an hour or more later. And it is VOLUMES. Sometimes it looks just like it did going in, sometimes it is thick, sometimes it just looks like water. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with a heavy spitter? He passes a lot of gas too, so I'm wondering if I sould try Isomil, but in general he is not fussy. Any help is appreciated!

I'm sorry, all I can say is bibs and cloth diapers. DD wore bibs for months and we had tons of cloth diapers around. Put a couple of changes of clothes in the diaper bag. It will pass. DD is spitting up a lot less now. We don't even put bibs on her anymore. I know you were hoping for some sort of solution, but I think it's just going to be time.

My ds did this too. AR did not help, its something that needs to run its course. I'd say he outgrew it at about 3 1/2 to 4 months so your almost there. I did try Isomil but it didn't help. Soy formula is being linked to some allergies later so in my opinion just because he's spitting up isn't a cause for a switch to soy. Yes the spit up does look like volumes but it really isn't. My ped said sometimes it just takes a little while for the babies lids (not the right word but you can get what I'm saying) to close correctly. This will cause spit up until it corrects itself. Just keep a watch on his diapers, make sure he's wetting and pooping, and maybe do a few weight checks. Trust me if he's gaining weight and pooping he's getting enough formula.

My daughter is the same. Shes 4 mos now and it is getting a bit better.Spitting up doesn't seem to upset her, and her growth/weight is good. If the same is true for your son, then I'd just say to have him wear a bib to save on clothing changes and lots of cloth diapers or baby washclothes handy!

BTW, my daughter is breastfed, so it isn't due to formula. Some babies just haven't developed that sphincter that holds the food down.

My son didn't spit up at all until about 8 weeks. From then until just recently, it increased until we were soaking many bibs each day. In the past week or so, it has noticeably decreased, both in volume and frequency. I read somewhere that it tends to peak at 4 months and is generally gone by 7 months. We peaked just past 4 months.

My ds is 4 mos. old and he spits up terribly also, but he is not fussy at all. He is nursed. In the morning, it seems like he throws up about 6 oz on himself and me most mornings. I always keep a bib on him bec after a feeding he will continue to spit up. I get nervous to burp him, bec I know it is going to come out fast and hard. I am not worried about it though. My ds seems very happy. My 1st son had reflux and was a fussy baby (he was on Isomil) and cried thru his feedings - so I don't think my 2nd baby has reflux. If your son isn't fussy, I would not worry too much about it.

DD is 10 months old and is still spitting up all day long! She never acts like she is in pain either, but is on Prilosec now and I do notice a SLIGHT improvement. She goes to a Ped. Gastro specialist and has been diagnosed with reflux. They tell me she'll hopefully outgrow it by 1 year.... keeping our fingers crossed!! Good Luck and keep buying lots of cute bibs!!!

We used zantac, didn't seem to do anything & also trieed different formula, used Nutramigen for a little while, very expensive, I think sometimes it just happens & basically u just have to wait for it to end, seems like it will never end !

My DS, who is 6 months, was diagnosed with reflux when he was 12 weeks old. He also spit up a great deal (I didn't even bother dressing him and kept him in a bib and diaper!) and was is no obvious discomfort. The key sign that it was reflux was WHEN he spit up - - he would spit up right after a nursing which is normal, but he would also spit up an hour+ later. It was this latter time frame that had the ped worried and diagnosed him with reflux.
He has been on Zantac for 3 months with amazing results, and we have begun to wean him off of the medication. Only on a couple of occasions did he ever seem to be in dicomfort, and all he would do is arch his back, followed by a huge spit up! And, btw, reflux is more common in boys than girls.....
I did a ton of research and Zantac is such an innocuous medication that there are virtually no side effects, nor are there any issues with long term usage, though I don't think 3 months consitutes long term!
    Hope this helps. Good luck.
