RE: The Blanket Breastfeeders...Why?
Nope. I don't take my meals with a blanket over my head. Why should my baby?

So only physically fit people should breastfeed in public? (it's not always possible to cover every bit of flesh) I'm a little hurt by this comment. I guess maybe I shouldn't go to the beach either since my thighs would show?
Not everyone has hang-ups about showing their jiggly tummy or thighs. This body grew an entire human being and these breasts continue to nourish that child. I'm really proud of that.
I'm not showing my tummy because I think it might excite someone, I'm showing my tummy so my baby can reach my nipple. It doesn't matter if my tummy is fluffy or flat. It's not about the people who might be watching, it's about feeding my baby.

RE: The Blanket Breastfeeders...Why?
LOL! My mother used to joke that she had visions of Truman as an adult sitting at the table with a blanket over his head because that was the way he learned to eat. FWIW, he eats fine without one.
I chose other because it's been different with each child. With DS I ALWAYS used a blanket. Partially because I used to feed him daily at daycare and that was what she requested (This was before I realized that *I* get to make the rules about my child, not someone else!), partially because I have ridiculously large breasts and it's difficult to keep them covered, and partially because the blanket signalled to DS that it was time to get down to business.
With DD, for some reason I've rarely used the blanket. I think it's because other than a couple months since she's been born, I've been able to stay home with her and have really developed an easier routine. She's also calmer, and doesn't require anything to keep her focused.
I think no matter how you breastfeed your child, if it's right for you, it's the right thing to do. Blankets and capes in public are just another way of NIP, and do just as much, if not more since they are more obvious, to raise awareness and acceptance of breastfeeding.

I used to do it when DD was younger because she needed more help latching on so I needed the blanket to be more discreet. But now, she hates having the blanket draped over her. But if I go into a corner, or just have DH stand in the way, I can actually get her latched on and let my shirt fall over her head (she doesn't seem to mind my shirt). So that's what I usually do now. And I think it is more discreet than a large blanket.

RE: The Blanket Breastfeeders...Why?
I don't have a problem with feeding under a blanket in and of itself. My problem is when women feel they HAVE to, or when people suggest that a baby nursing without having her head covered up is simply indecent. Ick.

I think you took what a said too personally. I just think that people that aren't a little aware give breastfeeders a bad rep. Its not that hard to wear a shirt that opens down the front when I'm going to the mall.

You said "I saw a woman setting on a display at the gap once with her lovehandles showing for all the world to see". That woman could have been me. That makes it personal.
If you don't want to show your tummy, that's fine, it's your choice. But you don't get to decide what other people choose.
I have nursed on an airplane while buckled into my seatbelt and leaning over sideways to her in her carseat. Whether or not my fat tummy showed was the last thing on my mind.
Why does it give breastfeeders a bad rep if some fat shows? And if it is bad to show fat, then as I said I guess I shouldn't go to the beach either.
What made it personal is that you seem to be objecting to seeing a fat person nurse in public. That is going to be offensive to fat people no matter how you phrase it. It was an insensitive way to say it and quite frankly there is no sensitive way to say "I don't want to see naked fat in public".

Well said, Karen! ITA...but just couldn't think of the words to phrase how I felt. You pretty much summed it up.

RE: The Blanket Breastfeeders...Why?
ITA!!!!!
I'm all for feeding with a blanket if it makes mom more comfortable, especially when it means the difference between NIP and not, but I hate it that some people out there take that to mean that blanket-feeding is the "proper" or the "only" way to do it.
And Karen, hugs. I don't know how many times I've heard of women being afraid to NIP more for being judged on how un-flat their belly is than their breasts. I'm fairly thin (knock wood) and I still have a belly roll and felt self-conscious at first, then I realized how wrong it was that I couldn't be proud of that poochy belly for what it represents. And at least we are baring our bellies for a reason, unlike some of the (ahem) questionably-attired hard-bellied pre-teens I've seen!
