Default Finger foods for 6+ month old baby???

Erik is VERY intent of grabbing the spoon and trying to feed himself. The clothes get it, of course, but eventually he does manage to get the (now empty) spoon into his little mouth. It's very cute, but I can only let it go on for so long...

What would some good, non hazardous fingerfood be? Not so much for nutrition, but for learning/practice...

    TIA

When B started grabbing the spoon, we used two--one for feeding and one for him to play with. Worked wonders and kept everyone pretty clean.

Cheerios is the traditional first finger food, but we didn't have a lot of luck w/ that early on, they really need a pincer grasp (thumb and first finger) for that. We had a little more luck w/ soft stuff cut in strips that he could palm and manipulate so he could suck on the end sticking out of his palm. I think we did tofu cut in a strip, steamed baby carrots cut vertically, steamed or sauteed zucchini. And crackers and teething biscuits once they can really chew. But you can keep offering cheerios or something similar, since Sammy was pretty content to try to pick those up for a while before he could actually get them in his mouth.
