You're right - lots of lovely photos :)
But I'm wondering - how long is extended BF generally done for? I can read french a bit, and some of those children were listed as four and a half years old. Isn't that kind of old for EBF?

The world wide *average* age for weaning is 4 years. That means that a lot of kids in a lot of countries nurse for more than 4 years.
It's the U.S. that is backwards on this.

I was just going to post the same thing as Karen. They always used to point this out at the LLL meetings I used to attend.

After nearly 18 months of tandem nursing, I weaned my 4 yo last summer. She STILL asks to nurse sometimes! :)
"But Mommy, it's just so good...... I love *rock-a-bye* milk!!!
When I lived in Europe I saw 7 and 8 year olds who nursed after school. Coming home from soccer practice to nurse . . . A bit extreme IMO, but Mom and child were content with the situation.

What does tandem nursing actually mean ?
Tandem nursing is when you have 2 children who are nursing.
Not necessarily both latched on at the same time though. If you are breastfeeding your toddler and you have another baby and you are breastfeeding both children, it is tandem nursing. Sometimes the older child will nurse at one breast while the baby nurses at the other, but not always. Sometimes they nurse separately.
I have heard it called tri-andem nursing when there are three children of different ages being breastfed by the same mother.

Some of the *perks* I experienced with tandem nursing were that when my milk came in after the new baby, I didn't experience painful engorgement. I stayed in the hospital 24 hours and DS was already pooping out BF stools before we left since my milk came in within hours of delivery. Tandem nursing made the new baby transition period a breeze. There was no jealousy between my 25 month old and the new baby.
Some of the *downsides* were that I developed mastitis 5 times in the first 3 months. . . OUCH!!! My house never got a good cleaning, and we ate lots of sandwiches.
But I'd highly recommend it for those who can pull it off. These pictures prove that many Moms and children benefit from it worldwide!!! :)
