My ds is 26 months old and around 36 pounds and is wearing a size 4T with no problem, he's also tall. I also purchased a few in size 6T and he can wear those fine it's just a bit long in the length. I bought a few for my dd this summer and she's not nearly as big as her brother but the 2T is already really tight for her and I wished I size up. I think the 6T would work well for you. Hope that helps.
