I don't know if you would consider this AWESOME, but for parties where there are kids and adults (and therefore varying portions) I like to make a good old-fashioned trifle. They are pretty, cool, serve a lot of people, so so so easy and as Donkey says in Shrek, "Who doesn't like a parfait??" Some layer ideas for you:

-Pound cake or white cake drizzled with Chambord, vanilla pudding, strawberries/raspberries, whipped cream
-Chocolate cake drizzled with cold coffee, Crushed Heath or other Toffee bar, chocolate pudding, whipped cream
-Yellow cake, banana pudding, sliced bananas, crushed graham crackers, toasted coconut, whipped cream
-Yellow Cake drizzled with a bit of Citron Vodka, Whipped Lemon curd or lemon custard, strawberries, crushed sugar cookies, whipped cream

You can make them pretty healthy by making low-fat cake, sugar free/fat free pudding, low fat Cool Whip and most people will love you for it.

    Just an idea

Sounds yummy. So for those of us who are good-old fashioned trifle virgins, what kind of dish are these served in?? :)

Trifle dish... which looks like a huge footed wine glass. If you don't have that, just use a large pretty glass bowl. You want to see the pretty contrasts between the different layers.
