Default What were your favorite childhood books?

What were your favorite children's books, and have you gotten copies of them for your own children?

    Some of my favorites included...

Make Way for Ducklings...partly because my grandparents lived in Boston and we visited often
The Velveteen Rabbit...I think I loved the illustrations in the version I had even more than the actual story
Fox In Socks...because it's just fun to read
Stuart Little...probably my all time favorite children's book

We have all the above except for The Velveteen Rabbit...I should pick up a copy...must have the William Nicholson illustrations

I also loved a book called "Puck's Peculiar Pet Shop", which has been out of print for years, but my dad managed to track down a copy for my boys.

When I was a little older, I also loved the All-of-a-Kind Family and Little House books (but I'm not sure my two boys will appreciate them quite so much)

Off the top of my head:

    One Morning in Maine
    Blueberries for Sal
    Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books
    The Great Brain books
    Hugo and Josephine
Little House on the Prairie books
The Littles (little people who lived in the walls of a house)

I will keep thinking of more, I am sure.

My favorite was The Tale of Two Bad Mice by Beatrix Potter.
I still have mine, and DD has her own.

Oh! I LOVED the Mrs Piggle Wiggle books! I bought the entire hard bound set when I was pregnant with DD#1. I cannot wait until she can read at that level. I also already bought her Sweet Valley Twins #1 which I found at a library sale- just in case she wants to get into that series too!

For books read to me as a young child:

    1) Mog the Forgetful Cat - absolute favorite - I still have my original one from 1972
    2) To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street
    3) Marvin K Mooney Will You Please Go Now (loved all those zany ways to leave)
    4) and of course, The Cat in the Hat (I still have my original too, but DS has his own)

I need to bring out Mog and start reading it to DS - he's the perfect age for it now

    For Books to read myself:

    1) Encylopedia Brown Series
    2) Little House Series
    3) Nancy Drew Series
    4) Justin Morgan Had a Horse
    5) Stormy
    6) Misty
    pretty much any horse book

    Make Way for Ducklings
    Alexander and the Wind-up Mouse
    Blueberries for Sal
    The Snowy Day
    Paddle to the Sea
    The Velveteen Rabbit
all Beatrix Potter - esp. Tom Kitten
    the Padington series
    the Pooh books
    The Runaway Bunny
the Edith and Little Bear books
    A Fish out of Water
    Corduroy
    Bread and Jam for Francis
    Amelia Bedelia
    Stuart Little

    ...

I could go on and on - DH thinks we need another room just for my books.
I have already bought (or received) all of these for DS, and his collection continues to grow I come from a family of avid readers.

I was also a Nancy Drew/Dana Girls fanatic (fueled by my mom's collection of originals) - but I probably won't pass that love down since I have a boy.

Ohh, I LOVED Justin Morgan had a horse! I read all of Walter Farley's "Black Stallion" books and had at least two copies of Black Beauty as well. I also had several well loved "dog as hero" books...Jim Kjelgaard was my favorite author for those. I also loved Beverly Cleary and Madeline L'Engle.
I guess those are chapter books, but those are what I remember best. My hands down favorite children's book when I was young was The Pokey Little Puppy.
