Books that I loved as a kid that my daughter now loves:

Busy Busy World by Richard Scarry is an all-time favorite. It is no longer being printed and now sells for $100 on eBay! (Yes, many cultural stereotypes, but still a phenomenal book! Despite being a member of one of the steretyped minorities, I adored it and so does my daughter.)

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey- I love that my daughter loves this book as much as my husband and I both did. This is my absolute favorite book to gift to other kids.

Many Dr Seuss books - Cat in the Hat, Wocket in my Pocket, Hop on Pop, Green Eggs and Ham - and my favorite, Dr. Seuss's ABC. Also Hand Hand Fingers Thumb by Al Perkins and Big Dog Little Dog by PD Eastman.

    Corduroy and Bedtime for Frances!

Some I've bought for DC are:

    Sylvester and the Magic Pebble
    Flat Stanley
    Mike Mulligan
Baby Island - will give DD when she's older

I also loved Justin Morgan had a Horse - will have to pick that one up, too!

    Great thread!

These were my favorites too. I so hope dd will like them when she is older.

I also loved a series of books called "The Shoes" (e.g., "Ballet Shoes," "Circus Shoes," etc). I think they are out of print now. Each book was about a different family or child, orphans if I am remembering correctly).
Noel Streatfield. VERY difficult to find(for the most part.) They aren't exactly a series. About different characters, each. Some are orphans though. (I just finished Ballet Shoes again). Some have been re-released more recently.

When I was reading on my own, I too loved the Little House on the Prairie series, Nancy Drew, Choose Your own adventure series, Beverly Cleary (Ramona Quimby), Judy Blume, and when older the Sweet Valley High books and the Babysitters club books. When I was younger my mom joined some Weekly Readers book club and we would get shipments of books monthly (I think). I remember A Pocket for Corduroy and a Madeline story and so many others that I don't remember the titles. My mom still has most of those books- I should look through them next time I am home.

This was fun to think back about all of these books...

ETA: The "shoes" books someone mentioned were reprinted a few years ago after the scene in "You've Got Mail" referenced them. I last saw them about a year ago at Borders.
