This one says that amoxicillin can can be used instead- is that an option? It's B rated.

I don't know about the meds/bf, but I remembered that you posted the other day about not feeling quite right. Were you diagnosed w/Lyme?

In any event, I hope you figure out what's best w/the treatment and bf-ing, are feeling better soon!!

So, first the disclaimer...I can make some general observations, but without having access to your medical records or knowing anything about you personally, I of course cannot make specific medical recommendations...this is just my two cents worth, not to be construed as specific medical advice and should be discussed with your own medical doctor...you get the idea. Don't sue me.

I think doxy gets a bad rap. It's in the same family as tetracycline, which really should be avoided while breastfeeding, because it can stain the permanent teeth a lovely shade of dingy grey. While long-term use of doxy has the potential to cause dental problems, for short-term use, it seems to be fairly safe.

I took doxy for a postpartum infection when DS was a newborn, and researched the heck out of it. I talked with our office PharmD, and read the available research in Thomas Hale's Medications and Mother's Milk (he has a website with publically accessible message boards, too!) and on PubMed and LactMed. Ultimately, I felt comfortable with using it, and would do so again if necessary. I think the best info you will find is on Hale's board and at LactMed.

http://neonatal.ama.ttuhsc.edu/lact/index.html - Dr. Hale's site, you can search the forums for doxycycline, I found 5 posts that were pertinent.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the references.

I have not been dx. However, I was bitten by a tick & these symptoms started after that. I need to insist on abx from the doc.

I would def go to your doctor for the tick bite and ensuing symptoms. I'm preggo and nursing, and on Amoxicillin for sinus infection AND tobramycin for pink eye. I noticed DS has started screaming since I started the amoxicillin in the past 2 days. Usually about wanting to nurse more, but at other times too, like not wanting to do something. He's generally not a screamer. Can't tell if this is coincidence, b/c my milk is low now and maybe even lower with the antibiotic? If the antibiotic is giving him a tummy ache? Or if he's protesting b/c I'm trying to cut back on nursing to times where he'd get the least exposure (am and before nap before I take my dose). It also seems like when he does nurse, he doesn't want to stop lately, but the fluid coming out is clear, so I think he's getting colostrum at this point.
