Default Need help with baby gate for odd-shaped entrance

I need to find a gate for the bottom of some stairs. Preferably a pressure gate. The stair is unique in that the first step only has a wall on one side, so the we have to go up to the second step in order to get a full wall on both sides. It looks like this:

We purchased a Kidco gateway, but have found that using it on anything but the floor level results in a bar across the middle of the step, and that can be treacherous when coming down the stairs with something in your arms.

    Any suggestions?

Try cardinal gates online. They have a model called the stairway special that is designed to be able to mount at an angel. We had a similar stairway and it worked the best. It will allow you to at least cover part of the first step.

A Kidco Center Gateway should work there. Mount it so that the bar on the floor is back against the third step and you shouldn't have any problem. We did this at our previous house. To clarify, put it on the second step, all the way back so that the uprights are touching the front of the third stair. That will put it out of the part of the step where you put your foot.

Thanks, but isn't it a bad idea to have two exposed steps for my son to crawl up on? Or is two stairs "ok"?

How old is he? How good is he with one step?

Even if you mount it at the front of the second stair, he can climb up the second stair by putting his feet through the bars. We did fine with two stairs pretty quickly after they learned to go up them. I got some foam mats to put at the bottom so they had a bit of protection from falls - just the 'puzzle piece' ones from Lowes or Sam's Club.

If you want to completely block off the stairway, look at the configure gate.

He's just 6 months, and not yet crawling, but we had a 8.5 month old visit this past weekend so had to get the gates up.
