Feeling dumb; why aren't my quotes highlighted?

I seem to be able to quote from a post, but it's always text, not highlighted and sometimes it doesn't get credited to the poster. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you have the [Q u o t e =...] and end quote [/Q UO T E] boxes when you do it...if you hit the "Quote" box at the bottom of the page and then don't delete anything, I think it should work. I don't know if you can have different settings that don't make it work though?

ETA: oops, it made the second part a quote too! Let me try to fix it (I put spaces into it to try and get it to show up, but there shouldn't be spaces in what you use...
