By definition, comfort food varies from place to person etc. What did you have in mind?

My favorite comfort foods are grits, greens, potato pancakes, baked beans and soups. And Ethiopian injera and legumes.

Are you looking for mac and (fake) cheese, potato dishes etc? Casseroles?

Feel free to be general so others can chime in and gain ideas too.

The reason I asked, specifically though, is that we'll be traveling to the ILs for a funeral. I thought it'd be nice to throw a help-yourself-to-a-warm-meal type dish in the crockpot or on the stove. ILs have a dairy allergy, so few of my own recipes will work. Dairy-free soups, pastas, roasts, etc. would all be welcomed. But they have to be tried and true delicious; MIL is a killer cook herself.
