Create your own balance bike?

we sent our Christmas list to the grandparents and my dad thinks we can create our own by buying a small real bike and taking the pedals off.

Would this really work? Has anyone tried anything like it?

A friend did this with their daughter. Worked fairly well.

With DD, when she was ready to ditch the training wheels, we took them off, lowered her seat so her feet were flat to the ground, and had her walk like a balance bike. Considered taking the pedals off but didn't need to. It worked like a charm--within a couple of days she took off pedaling all on her own. :-)
