Nevermind, I didn't read the entire thread and posted too early.

My son (also 5) got the regular Operation game for his birthday and is the same way with it. The noise startles him every time as well so we've only played it once in the 4 months we've had it.

You know, when I was a kid I wanted one of those OPERATION games so badly. When I finally got one, the noise really freaked me out and I was a lot older. I think it is a grating toy, the buzz it makes is awful.

For my DD who is just 3. Thanks to this board....we have very few misses!

Hits:
M&D Play Cookie Set--I've been eating "cookies" alot!
KidKraft Toaster--she loves that it pops the toast up

We opened them late since we had all our Duplo blocks at our house and we were at BIL's house, but the Duplo Building Plates - the large, flat, green squares you build ON...they were a huge hit with both kids yesterday - several times during the day! http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Large-Gre...0642244&sr=8-1 Before the plates, no one cared about the blocks.

Isn't that funny? In our house, having a plate nearby means the difference between playing with them for 3 minutes and 30 minutes!

Cranium Cariboo - super fun game- he loved it.
Moon Sand - the dinosaur digging one.
Playdough - always a hit- he loved the playdough sisors.
Giant bucket of Army stuff from TRU- 100 pc set from Grandma- not super fun to clean up...

Matchbox Space Shuttle - this one was pretty great...

Optimus Prime Semi that turns into a dart blaster... (it said 5+, but he was able to operate it just fine).

Misses-
Animal Scrambles (random game from a family member)
He wasn't too into opening the Barefoot books I ordered, but hopefully will grow to love them later .
Color Wonder book set
Marvel Heros Ball blaster - He loved the gun and ball part, but the assembly on the target net was ridiculous and he loved shooting the balls at Dad much more So half hit half miss?
MD band in a box... thought he'd love this, but it only lasted about a minute.
