Can you use regular kitchen trash bags with Diaper Genie II Elite?

I'm sure this might sound like a stupid question to you. I am just not liking the idea of spending $6-7 for one measly refill cartridge. Can a basic kitchen trash bag go in there? LIke when you open it, tuck the edges of the trash bag around the container, then close it?

That is amazing!! I can't imagine why it would not work! Thanks for posting this. Now I don't feel so bad about putting the Genie II Elite on my registry and a couple refills. Then I'll try the kitchen bags. I have plenty of rubber bands of different sizes so if they start wearing out or snapping, I can easily replace. Gosh! Thanks so much!!!

I haven't tried it yet because I still have refills and don't have regular kitchen trash bags - we use large ones. But I have saved a refill container and the elastics with the Sunday paper.
