ideas for new kitchen table

Searching for a new kitchen table and nothing seems to fit my ideal. Any ideas?

Price <$2000
seats 6 standard and expands to 8
rectangle
40 or 42" wide
dark wood
no upholstery on the chairs
not too modern
standard height (not counter height or pub height)
no grooves to catch crumbs

This table & chairs set from World Market is my leading contender and my only hesitation about it is the groove that catches crumbs (the reviewers mention it consistently):

I've looked at RoomStore, Basset, Rooms to Go, and some local places in person and nothing fits what I'm looking for better than the set from World Market. (ok - there was a $4500 set but with 3 boys nothing is heirloom whether you spend $500 or $5000)

Thanks for any ideas on where to look next.

We just bought the Lugano table and chairs from World Market and love it. It is a solid, well made table. I especially like the trestle leg style just b/c it is different from the traditional 4 legs. It seats 6 comfortably if you go with the Lugano chairs. You might be able to squeeze in 3 chairs on each side with smaller chairs, but I'm not positive. The Lugano chairs are high backed and quite large. You can also fit more if you buy the Lugano bench and use that on one side (or two sides, if you buy two Lugano benches).

Solid, great table. I love the classic, simple, rustic look of it. No grooves that would catch crumbs. I was able to purchase the entire set in-store (had to wait for some chairs to come in though)--6 chairs, the table and a bench.

We have a table from World Market that we LOVE!!! Unfortunately I don't see it on the site. We have had it for 4 years now and it still looks brand new. I would highly recommend World Market. Keep in mind you can maybe find another table with out grooves (ours is solid on top) and then get the chairs in the unupholstered style you like. Also we love our bench for kids- we can squeeze more little people in that way instead of chairs. (We have 4 chairs and the bench)

ETA: the previous owner of our house had the Lugano and LOVED it as well. She still has it (we are friends) and it looks brand new.

Cost Plus's dining furniture set starts today! Not sure if the online and in-store prices are exactly the same, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

The Lugano set is only $799 (table, 4 chairs and 1 bench) online! If you can get it at that price in the store, you could avoid the shipping/surcharges.

Have you looked into local furniture makers? We have gotten furniture made by a local Amish man that has been exactly what we wanted. There is also a gentleman here that makes "fine furniture" who does everything to specification. It seems with you budget, you might be able to find something locally made.

Have you tried an unfinished furniture store? I found some pottery barn knock offs for much less. Plus they will finish anyway you like. The one around here lets you pick out the legs you want and they top you want and the finish you want. The turn around at our unfinished furniture store is about a month. Plus most of the furniture is made in the USA.

How about Room and Board? They have lots of dining tables, in various finishes, and you can even customize your own (length, height and width).

Table + 8 chairs at Room and board is going to come out way higher than $2000. Their chairs start at around $200 IIRC and their tables run 1100-over 2000 for just the table.

We got our set off of Craigslist...might be worth a look. Ours is from Pottery Barn so not the greatest thing out there but not super cheap either and we only paid $400 for what new would have been over $2000 by a long shot. It was all like new, young yuppie couple hired a designer and replaced most of their furniture.


After that I second the unfinished furniture places...I totally covet some chairs my friends got from one. Very classic and sturdy and not a bad price for new.

We purchased the Orient Express Buster Square Dining Table (60 x 60 x 60) last year and absolutely love it. It is solid wood with no veneer, extremely beautiful, and very sturdy. It's much, much better quality than anything we found in furniture stores, and we get frequent compliments. Color is very dark brown espresso. It's standard height with no grooves.

It also comes in 2 different rectangular sizes:
*Buster 72" rect ext - 72" x 42" x 30" (extends to 96" with choice of turned or straight legs)
*Buster kitchen - 56" x 42" x 30" (with 18" leaf)

We purchased from LosAngelesFurniture.com (a.k.a. Metropolitan Living Furniture) and had it shipped. Even with the shipping costs it was less expensive than buying it elsewhere with cheaper shipping. Total cost table + shipping = $1048.

LosAngelesFurniture.com does not list the rectangular tables on their website (the manufacturer Orient Express Furniture does but website is difficult to navigate); however, when we ordered by phone through LAF, they offered multiple different options (rectangular, turned legs, etc.) even though they weren't shown on the website.

We purchased these dining chairs from Overstock to go with the table, and they match perfectly. However, since you want a look that is not too modern, you could certainly use a more traditional solid wood chair instead. I would say the table itself is more old world than modern.

I cannot say enough good things about this table, and I am extremely picky about wood furniture. I wanted something that would stand the test of time, could be refinished later if necessary (difficult to do if there is a veneer), and could be handed down to our children. This is definitely that kind of table.

You may also want to check out Crate&Barrel's tables if you haven't already. Many are reasonably priced. The ones I saw in the store were good quality although probably not quite as good as the Buster table we purchased.
