We have to get new counter stools (our are falling apart). Up until now we haven't had a kitchen table, using our dining room table instead. Now DH and I are thinking we want a kitchen table as well. So should our counter stools match the kitchen chairs?

I don't think they have to match but if they don't, it should be obvious that it was a delibrate "design decision" and not an "unable to find matching stools so these will do" choice.

My stools don't match, but they do coordinate with the table. I'd rather things complement each other than match, so I don't get tired of looking at the same design all the time.
