Default dust allergy suffers-area rugs and vacuums?

Does anyone else have experience with dust allergies? Can you be allergic to dust/dust mites and still live in a house with area rugs if they're vacuumed every day or are you doomed to a life of pills and shots? If you can what kind of vacuum do you use?

I don't really have advice, just sympathy. My brother had a terrible dust allergy and -- because it was the 1970s -- we grew up in a house with shag carpets. TERRIBLE.

I react badly to dust, too, and we have exactly two rugs in our house..... a little welcome mat, and the rug for when step out of the shower. Rugs are not worth the hassle, IMO.

The other thing (and you've probably thought of this) is to be very viligent about having the ducts in your house cleaned. Can really help.
