Silly question about Duplos...

I've been looking online at Duplo sets like the ones below but I'm not quite sure how they work. Do kids actually build the vehicles, etc? If not, is there any advantage to buying the Duplo vehicles/people/animals over any other brand, like say FP's Little People?

They come partially built (usually wheels and such are in place) and you can build the rest. There are different ways to configure them too , usually shown on the box.

I have a police car, and it's already built. You can snap a couple of duplos on top of it, and snap the duplo cop into it, but that's it. I'm guessing the fire engine and garbage truck are similar.
