Question Can I freeze store bought sandwich bread?

We ended up with 2 loaves of bread this week and won't be able to use them up immediately. Can I freeze one of them? (it's the Sara Lee soft & smooth 100% whole wheat). And how do i thaw it when I am ready to use it. We usually use it for grilled cheese or to spread some butter/jelly on.

    Thanks much

Heck yeah. I do it all the time. It will thaw out just from sitting on the counter for a few hours. Just be careful it doesn't get squished in the freezer.

That is the only way we keep bread! I toast it a bit if I want it immediately, but for the kids lunches I spread right onto the frozen bread and by lunchtime the bread is perfect. In fact, a good friend of my dad's was a commercial baker and he told us that you should freeze bread immediately (even home baked) and it will not get dry and yucky - that is how he is able to have inventory for commercial baking. My dad is a bread baker and freezes his bread right as it cools off and then defrosts the whole loaf when we need it and it tastes totally fresh. The mistake people make is waiting too long to freeze it. Also, be sure the bag is sealed well and that there is no air left in it (twist it nice and tight before using the tie).

Yes! I buy bread from the baking outlet store across the street from my work - it's about half what I would pay in the store. I buy 5 loaves at a time and freeze.

When I was a kid, this was the only way my grandmother would keep bread, so if you wanted a sandwich, you either had it toasted or you knew you'd get a frozen spot in the slice.

The sandwich bread I freeze is always dry and needs to be toasted....maybe this is what I'm doing wrong. Thanks to OP for this thread!
