The best thing people did for me after my twins were born was to take my older two out for fun. I was so busy with the twins that a simple trip to the park was completely unmanagable. I had a few friends and family members come over regularly to play with my older two and it just made a world of difference here.

I would suggest diapers and wipes. For boys, Huggies Supremes are great and for girls, Pampers in the teal box are great. I would also get hyper allergenic wipes.

Another idea is to bring a meal or two over and/or a Crock Pot and a recipe book.

Lastly, any help you can give via your time would be great... a little dusting, cleaning a bathroom, going to the store or other errands, etc. would be most appreciated. And lastly don't forget to baby the father too !

Clothes for the twins at an older age would be a good idea as long as you consider the season, etc... Maybe 6 months or something... Staple clothes such as onesies should not matter.

there is a cute cd "twinspin: tunes for twins".
i echo the dr. suess rompers--thing 1 and thing 2. you could get them in 6 or 9 months.
not a twin gift, but socks from jazzy toes are adorable. they have a pattern to look like sneakers, or mary janes, or loafers.

Do they have different first initials? If so, I'd get them onesies with their initials on them from etsy. Or how about name blocks from etsy:

Cute personalized burp cloths? Their own lovies?

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/loviesformybabies

(note that I paid $16 each from that seller back in September - she raised her prices for the holidays and looks to have been cleaned out, so you might ask before ordering anything)

Another cute lovey - this seller has a number of cute items:

Default A few gift ideas from the Dad of 8-month old twin boys...

We've said that the best gifts are:

Zip sheets from: www.cloudsandstars.com You can get different colors for boys and girls.

Extra large blankets from: www.bugnbelle.com They are the best for swaddling. Again, different patterns for boys and girls.

    Sleep Sheeps: www.cloudb.com
