wow! that is really nice. i love it. i really want to make a butterfly cake but i've never decorated a cake so i don't trust myself to try.
Hi Citymama-
You can do it! I replied to your post with regard to the supplies I purchased. Otherwise, here is what I used:
To place the cake, foil covered cardboard (I did not have a display plate large enough), several smaller mixing bowls for tinting the frosting,a couple spatulas.
The Wilton Student kit came with a practice board, so I practiced each tip a few times before going to work on the cake. I made the cake, assembled it with 1st recipe of butter creamfilling and crumb coat frosting the first day.
The second day I made the decorating frosting (a different recipe rated to hold together better for decorations, while my first recipe was rated highest for taste), and then tinted and decorated.
I did the cake all freehand though I did mark out the happy birthday part to make sure it was even and proportional.
