Question Cake/Cupcakes without junk, dyes, etc?

We're doing DS1's bday party out-of-town when visiting family. He doesn't handle dye well, and I'd rather avoid artificial junk altogether although sugar doesn't bother me for a bday celebration rarity.
I've decided to order a cheap standard cake for pics and the adults. For DS1, though, I'd like to make or buy cupcakes or something that won't make him nuts.
    Suggestions?
They do have an indy health food store in the region.

Do you have a Meijer near you? They have a line of mixes called "Meijer Naturals" that have cake mixes without food dyes, hydrogenated oils, or HFCS. You can make frosting by hand at home without dyes - very very simple, just google it.

Do you bake at all? Cake and frosting isn't that tough as long as you're not trying any fancy decorations! I just did it last weekend and am not the world's most savvy baker - it came out great.

When DS was allergic to milk, we did the applesauce cake receipe (posted here many times, you can do a search), and made it into cupcakes with a cream cheese icing. It got raves from everyone. It's basically, flour, applesauce, oil, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg. I also added ripe bananas and shredded carrots.

I'll do some searching, THANK YOU! I was trying to avoid having to bake TOO MUCH at someone else's place. (Ok, truth is, at my mom's. See, she will offer to make them and will be offended if I don't let her and also offended if I criticize her ingredients. I already tried to ask her for ingredients so I could buy alternative versions, and that didn't go well.) Maybe I'll call the health food store there to see if they carry Cherry Brook.
