Default any good bread machine recipes?

I recently bought a bread machine. I want to make better bread without the preservatives that store bought has. I have made whole wheat bread and followed the recipe in the manual. It is denser bread and was good on the first day that it was baked. On the second day it was dried out and crumbly. I have read that if you want a bread to last longer it needs oil or butter (serves as a preservative). The recipe I followed didn't have either. Before I throw in the towel and make bread by hand (which I am a bit intimidated by!), does anyone have any good recipes for me to try? Or tricks that I am missing?

yes! Add vital wheat gluten to your ingredients-it makes it much softer/less crumbly/less heavy. And for recipes, I have had great luck with all the recipes in this PDF

    and this recipe

again adding gluten (directions are on the package). Its next to the yeast at my supermarket-but my mom can't find it at all at hers.
