Walking (especially up/down stairs) and swimming will help baby engage in the pelvis, and pressure on the cervix is a good thing. Your baby might not be positioned optimally, which is why labor is starting and stopping.. check out things you can do to fix any possible positioning issues.

FWIW, I had a lot of prodromal labor with my third, and I think that's what helped 'real' labor be so easy.

Definitely check out www.spinningbabies.com (under 'positioning techniques') and see what you can do to get the baby aligned properly in your pelvis. I found the 'abdominal lift-and-tuck' was what got my labor moving in an active pattern.

Curb walking can also help - you walk with one foot on the curb and the other in the street, the up-and-down motion helps get the baby down into the pelvis and encourages dilation.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I'd already added some in but took a long walk with DH last night. Awesome weather!!! and I ended up tired enough to sleep all night.
I have been told that the baby is positioned perfectly for the last 6+ wks so hopefully that's true.
    Maybe today?????

LOL! No problem. Both of my boys were born at 41+ weeks so I had plenty of time research this stuff!

OP- I walked every night with ds1 and it always brought on contx. I'd stay up till like 1am timing them but got tired and went to bed. I figured if they were the real thing they would wake me up! Never were!
