We use an awful lot of the Z Bars (Clif Bars for kids). Both DD and DS love them and that's pretty much all DD ate on our recent Disney trip.

We also have bags of freeze dried strawberries and blueberries but those can get kind of messy.

We eat a lot of cheese sticks but not usually on the run.

Bags of Cheerios or other small crackers or cereals.

I just found applesauce in sort of tube containers (like the yogurts) and so you can bring those when traveling, no spoon and theoretically no mess.

    Peas
    Quartered grapes
    Bananas
Hard boiled egg (whites, yolks can get messy)
    Whole grain flatbread with cheese
    Kiwi fruit pieces

We do the Dora packaged edamame too, also Brother's fruit crisps. I try to keep an apple in the car as well. We do nutrigrain bars rather than TJ's b/c of the nut issue. I try to limit them b/c of the HFCS. DS calls them "monkeybars".

If I feel like lugging a cooler I'll bring: cream cheese on whole wheat rolls, sometimes with chopped chicken and cheese on the rolls instead, sliced grapes, small pieces of melon, flatbread with hummus (though lately DS hasn't been digging the hummus), cheese tortellini. Occasionally, I'll bring leftover homemade pizza which DS will eat cold.

We're not doing egg right now (allergies) but he loved bagels with cream cheese or some other kind of spread when he was allowed to have them.

Sometimes I'll bring a thermos of soup or macaroni and cheese but that can get messy.

Wow I love the idea of a thermos. That is what DD is eating for her main meals now, soups and stews, so that would really be helpful to have.

Also the tortellini will probably hold up well for an afternoon as well.

Thanks everybody. I'll have to look for some fruit/nutrient bars, sounds like those are pretty popular.

where do you get this? we have been getting applesauce crushers from tj's and dd2 loves them. she won't eat applesauce with a spoon anymore. but they are a little pricey and since dd2 goes thru them so fast, i would love to find a cheaper option.

Just to clarify, the TJ bars do not have HFCS. I like the monkeybars name.

Oh yeah, I know. I would prefer to eat those, but have to go with the the HFCS Nutragain ones b/c they don't have the nut warning that the TJ ones do.

Waffles, pancakes or muffins (I make whole-grain ones on the weekends and freeze the leftovers); dried fruit such as figs, apples, cranberries; nuts such as unsalted cashews or sliced almonds. I make roll-ups with the handmade wheat tortillas from Trader Joe's (no preservatives) spread with a little hummus and sprinkle on some grated cheese, or a slice of roasted turkey or ham, cut in half or in ~1-inch slices depending upon child's preference. Those little Babybell cheeses are nice too.
