Default Toddler Proof Kitchen Trash Can?

We need to find a kitchen trash can that DS can't open. He's been dropping his toys into the trash can. We're usually right there to fish them out, but sooner or later something is going to get thrown out with the trash. We looked at some with foot pedals, but the lids on those were all very lightweight and DS could easily open them. So....looking for something that has a lid heavy enough that DS can't get in but also easy enough for us to use. Or other solutions for toddler proofing the kitchen trash. TIA!

We have this one. It has a built in lock on the lid. Love it!

This makes my kids sound really not-so-smart, but we found simply turning it around, so that the open button was towards the wall, worked for us.

We have had the same one for 3 years now, and it is still going strong. The lock works great. DD (2.5 yrs) has not figured it out, and it does not spill open when she knocks it over.

I thought for sure the backwards trash can thing would work for us too! No luck! Took my daughter about 2 weeks of observing me using it to figure out she could do the same thin...bummer!

We have a trash can with a foot pedal and use one of these straps by Safety 1st, it works pretty good when we remember to latch it...

Nothing worked for my DS. He could open baby gates by 18 months - we said he was like the raptors from Jurassic Park movie - he would keep testing until he figure out how to open something.

We ended up putting the trash can in the laundry room, and putting a child proof lock on the door handle - he did eventually figure out how to open those, but he was then old enough to not throw things into the trash.

I hope you find what works for you.

We have a stainless one from Sam's with a foot pedal and bought a Safety 1st Multi-Purpose Appliance Latch to keep it closed. We actually use these in a bunch of places. On the mini fridge, and on the doors of our TV cabinet. They work great and aren't so difficult to open that we have trouble with them. So far DS can't open it...he does periodically latch the trash can closed for us when we forget though
