Default Bday gift for 7yo boy?

DD has been invited to a classmate's birthday party this weekend. When I emailed our RSVP, I asked the mom what types of things her son is interested in. I didn't hear anything back.

I've been emailing his mom today about different class-related things and, once again, asked what her son liked/his interests so I could find an appropriate gift, and she didn't respond to that part of my email. I'm guessing that she feels uncomfortable answering the question and might be viewing any answer she provides as a request to purchase xxxxxx for her son. Don't know.

In any case, what's a good gift for a 7yo boy? I'm guessing that I'll use the $10 B&N coupon mentioned in the Bargains forum. I honestly have NO CLUE what he likes. Any suggestions?

Oh, I do have some sticky mosaics sets lying around. I have:
    dinosaurs http://www.orbfactory.com/Products/S...Line/Dinosaurs

    and dragons http://www.orbfactory.com/Products/S...l-Line/Dragons

I don't know if those would be too young for a 7yo, though.

    Thoughts?

My 7 year old is a girl, but usually I give some kind of game- board or cards or else a craft- Alex or Creativity for Kids, or something else similar.

DS is going to a classmate's 6 year birthday party on Saturday, I have no clue what he likes, neither does DS.

    So, I ordered this:

It says ages 8 and up. Looks fun. I think it's cheaper on the TRU website

DS is going to a birthday party for a 7 year old this weekend. We picked this up from Borders and will include a gift receipt. http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Brickmast.../dp/0756663113
I used a 33% off coupon so it brought the price down to about $21. Slightly cheaper on Amazon, but with the Borders gift receipt it will be easier for them to return if necessary.

I went to Target today and they had games like Scrabble and The Game of Life on sale for $10. DD is 7 and enjoys playing them.

My boys just turned seven. Gifts they received from friends for their birthday that were well received were:

    snowtube from BJs
    Star Wars toys
    a Lego set
    K'Nex sets
    Zoom-O: http://www.amazon.com/Zoom--Disc-Lau...1856087&sr=8-2
    Hot Wheels toy
Spy Gear Night Goggles (HUGE hit): http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Planet-Ge...1856164&sr=1-1
Creativity for Kids Create Your Own Book kits

My guys like the Sticky Mosaics but have been doing them for a while and I think are starting to lose interest in them.

    HTH for some ideas!

I give Stomp Rockets for bdays a lot. I think Mighty Beans and Hex Bugs are "in" right now too.

Target has Operation, Jenga and Connect 4 for $10 apiece right now. They have been my go-to gifts for parties. When I can't find a deal like that, I usually give a $15 B&N or Borders gift card.

My 7-year-old DS is into Beyblade right now. It is available at Target. A single one I think costs about $8.

He also wants Kung Zhu hamsters, the armor, and the vehicle, Legos, and Legos, and Legos... for Christmas.
