borders going bankrupt?

My dad just contacted me to urge me to spend my Borders gift card quickly -- he heard on the news this morning that they were close to bankruptcy!

There have been news articles which might indicate it. Two executives quit this week. I need to spend my GC, I have $70 left but didn't see anything I wanted the other night

I wondered how they were faring with e-readers and Barnes and Noble...it seems that they don't have as much to offer.

Oh no It's the only bookstore near me. It's where I go for my sanity time away from kids on the weekend. Barnes and Noble is 30 minutes away.

They have been iffy for at least a year, but if they did badly this holiday season, it could push them over. I would use up whatever you have.

Before Borders became a big chain, it was a wonderful independent bookstore in Ann Arbor, MI. I hope if the chain goes, that it can turn back into what it was before...

Yes. Use those GCs quickly! Over the holidays it came out they have delayed payments to vendors and the publishers aren't sending new stock. The latest I read (over the weekend) was Borders had indefinitely delayed their regularly scheduled return of excess merchandise to the publishers because they knew they wouldn't receive credit for the returns (since they owe the publishers). I think they issued that 50% off coupon over the weekend because they so depesperately need cash.
