Ocracoke Island NC-outer banks, you get there by (free) ferry-you can take your car on it. We were there for our honeymoon and now camp there every couple years. We're headed back this summer for our 10th...

Where would you recommend staying in Nantucket?

We've stayed in both Madaket and Nantucket Town when we've gone.

In Nantucket Town we stayed at a B & B just on the edge of town - Safe Harbor that was very handy. We chose it because they would allow us to bring our dog with us at the time. Not sure if they still allow it or not.

We also have rented a condo in Madaket - however that almost requires you taking your vehicle with you since it's too far out of town to walk - and biking there ALL the time would be tiresome.

Regardless we have always taken our vehicle to both MV and Nantucket when we've went. It's a very fun experience with driving into the belly of the ferry and I'd guess it'd be great for kids (we've not been with our boys yet).

But would you really call Nantucket "quiet"? I find it expensive and crowded every time we go.

The town is pretty hectic when the ferry is unloading but for us it always seemed to thin out quickly and quiet down nicely. Madaket and 'Sconset are the epitomy of quiet imo...

We have friends who have a house on Tower Beach (between town and Madaket) so we usually stay there. We've also rented a house just outside town (5 minute walk to Main St) and stayed at the Beachside on North Water St. The Beachside is one of the only actual hotels on the island and is the most affordable. It has a pool and is a 5 minute walk to Jetties Beach (our favorite with kids!!) and a 10 minute walk into town (15 to the ferries).

We'd like to rent a house out on Madaket this summer. If we do, we'll rent a jeep there so we have the oversand permit.

Jetblue flies into Nantucket so that's an option too.
